What is Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)?

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is natural gas — mainly methane — stored at high pressure so it can be used as a fuel. Compressing the gas reduces its volume without changing its composition, which makes it more practical to store and move for vehicles and some commercial operations.
Unlike Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which is cooled until it becomes a liquid, CNG stays in gaseous form and is held in high-pressure cylinders or tanks. For most Nigerian businesses, the useful question is not the chemistry. It is whether CNG can support the trucks, buses, generators or other equipment you actually run, in a commercially workable way.
How Nigerian businesses use CNG
The most common starting point in Nigeria is mobility. Logistics fleets, trucking companies, bus operators and other commercial vehicles that work every day and consume meaningful volumes of fuel are usually first in line for a CNG conversation.
Some manufacturers, food processors and commercial operators also look at CNG for generators or other stationary equipment, depending on the site, the volume and whether supply can be made to work. CNG is not interchangeable with LNG. CNG is typically discussed for vehicles and more contained operating loops. LNG is more often considered for larger or specialised industrial energy requirements.
Why the conversation is growing in Nigeria
Fuel is a core operating cost for fleets and many factories. Operators in cities such as Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt are asking whether CNG belongs in their energy mix. That is a commercial question, not a judgement on the fuels they already use.
Interest is not the same as automatic suitability. Access to supply, vehicle readiness, route patterns and operating conditions all matter. A logistics company running daily routes from a known base is a different case from a factory considering process energy, or a business with vehicles scattered across the country.
What businesses should consider
Whether CNG is appropriate depends on vehicle profile, fuel consumption, route patterns, gas pricing, infrastructure, location, availability and operating conditions. Those factors should be reviewed against the fleet you actually run — not assumed from a generic comparison.
Safety and handling also differ from liquid fuels. Methane is lighter than air, so a leak behaves differently from petrol or diesel pooling on the ground. That does not remove the need for proper cylinders, trained handling and applicable regulatory requirements.
